Camp-Perrin and Saut-Mathurine: waterfalls, caves and mountains

Camp-Perrin guide: Saut-Mathurine waterfall, Kounoubwa Cave, La Prise, Lachaux Pond and places to stay.

Camp-Perrin sits in the mountains north of Les Cayes. It's the place for cool water, waterfalls and caves.

Saut-Mathurine

One of the largest waterfalls in Haiti: about 27 m high and 30 m wide on the Cavaillon River, some 7 km northeast of town. A natural pool at the base is great for a swim. The August 14, 2021 earthquake damaged it badly.

More places to visit

  • Kounoubwa Cave: about a 30-minute walk from town. Visits by appointment, flashlights provided. Entry: 100 gourdes per adult (2025).
  • La Prise (Balanier): the intake of the Davezac canal, a popular swimming spot.
  • Lachaux Pond: one of the ponds in the mountains.
  • Saint Anne Festival: every July 26, with music at La Prise.

Where to stay

Further afield: Pic Macaya

Pic Macaya National Park, in the Massif de la Hotte, has two high peaks: Pic Macaya (2,347 m) and Pic Formon. Hire a local guide to hike up.
